Just mention Miami Beach and you conjure up images of expansive beaches, Art Deco architecture, a vibrant nightlife that attract celebrities and world-renown art galleries. But here’s a little-known secret: the most stunning artworks are not seen in galleries but on warehouse walls out in the open. Welcome to Wynwood Walls.
Wynwood Walls is a dazzling array of street art paintings, as diverse as the roster of artists brought together to ignite the power of art. From the moment I set eyes on this enthralling outdoor museum, I was mesmerized. It was not so much street art as massive brightly colored murals that blew my mind.
It was originally conceived in 2009 by Tony Goldman, a real estate visionary, to re-energize the neglected neighborhood of Wynwood. After purchasing some warehouses in Wynwood, he started working with art dealer, Jeffrey Deitch, a fan a street art, and they transformed the warehouses with 12 artists in a project to celebrate street art and graffiti. Wynwood Walls was born.
Since then, they have been able to attract artists like Shepard Fairey, Maya Hayuk, Futura, Os Gemeos and Aiko Nakagawa to contribute their spellbinding masterpieces to this open-air gallery of urban art. Their different approaches have created a tapestry of colors, textures and themes that makes Wynwood Walls so unique. They have also provided local artists opportunities to showcase their creative abilities by including them in the mix.
Needless to say, this has impacted the neighborhood of Wynwood in a remarkable way, turning the once humdrum town into a thriving cultural hub. The surge of tourists and art-lovers to the area has livened up the community and everywhere you see small businesses and restaurants springing up.
Moreover, the presence of Wynwood Walls has had a significant economic impact on the neighborhood. The influx of visitors seeking to explore the art and cultural experiences has resulted in increased foot traffic, new businesses, and employment opportunities. Local restaurants, cafes, and galleries have thrived, creating a ripple effect that has benefited the entire community.
This is definitely worth a visit next time you find yourself in Miami.
